Setting Intentions: Size Matters

Set the number of intentions that works for YOU.

Here’s Part 4 in the 6-part “Setting Intentions” series. (Start here.)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Right-For-You Portions
Why: When you over-order, you confuse the kitchen, confuse yourself, and might even make yourself sick.
For example, you first order fried chicken. Minutes later, you call again, “You know what, I’ll have some spring rolls as well.” Then you think, “I’m not sure I want the chicken, but I sure feel like some hot and sour soup.” The kitchen takes your order but you can’t cancel your chicken, so it will be delivered anyway.
The kitchen gets busy with your orders as you place them, and every time you add something on, they are halfway through preparing your previous order, so they complete it no matter what, and in the end, you get a whole bunch of food delivered.
If that’s what you want, and it works for you, go for it!
If not, you end up with a lot of food. If you ate it all at once, you’d probably get sick. If you didn’t eat it in time, it’ll start going bad. What can you do? You decide what you really want to eat, freeze the rest of it and keep it for another day.
When you make decisions in a variety of directions, the Universe will show up to support those decisions. With the right (for you) proportion of variety, juggling different things can be lots of fun. Some of us even thrive on it, but there are also times when it can become too much.
Once you get to the point where you feel like you’re spinning too many plates, it’s time to put some things on hold, de-prioritize or strike off some options. You are the only person who knows the “ideal” proportion of what you need in your life to feel balanced.
On the flip side, if you under-order, you end up feeling low on energy, and probably rather uninspired to do anything. No action taken = No momentum for intention. Yikes~
Take note: Whether you focus on one thing, or a few things at a time, it’s up to you. There is no such thing as setting the wrong intention. The real question is, what do you want most at this point in time?
Try this: Figure out Your Right Portions by playing with timeframes. Set intentions for the year, the month, the week, the day, etc. Also, play with project intentions – whatever you’re focusing on in your life, really. Your Right Portion is in the sweet spot where excitement meets actionable.
Setting Intentions: Essence
Identify the energy behind the intention
Why: Having clarity about the energy you want in your life means you can start creating that energy immediately.
Whatever the intention you are setting, there is always a core quality underlying it. Dig deeper to find out what the essence of the quality is.
You’d want to start bringing elements of that into your life through action, in whatever way you are comfortable with at the moment. It doesn’t necessarily have to be big, or intimidating.
Personally, I like starting small and simple.
  • Small → I don’t get scared.
  • Simple → I will actually get it done. (And bringing the energy in through ACTION is *super* important!!!)
For a long time, I wanted to live in Japan, but couldn’t figure out how. I applied to join a programme to teach English in local schools, but was disappointed both times. Finally, I decided I wanted live there at least for 6 months no matter what.
I didn’t know exactly how I was going to make it happen, but I started filling up my life with more and more Japanese-related activities, e.g. watching more Japanese TV. Super easy starting point, right? 😉 I also started going for Japanese classes again.
Then, I changed all my passwords to things like: ‘iLOVEjapan’, ‘japanhereicome’, ‘heretodayjapantomorrow’.
The core energy behind all that: loving Japan, going to Japan, being in Japan. Even now as I write this, I remember that feeling.
Take note: Avoid using ‘want’ when setting intentions. It shifts the focus to the energy of ‘wanting’, which doesn’t really get anyone anywhere.
Try this:
If it feels challenging to figure out the essence of the quality you are looking for, break down your intention into some kind of activity, e.g. “If I were (doing X), I would be (doing this).” So in my case, it would have been: “If I were in Japan, I would be speaking Japanese every day.”
Give it a shot and let me know how it goes in the comments!
Setting Intentions: Surprise!~
Surprise Tiger Card
Surprise Tiger Card by drawnbylucysmith
This is Part 2 in the 6-part “Setting Intentions” series. (Start here.)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
When you feel really stuck figuring out exactly what you want, consider leaving it to the Universe. This means…

Be open to surprises

Why: What we ask for, doesn’t necessarily come in the form we expect it to.

It’s a little like going to a restaurant you like, and saying, “I want to eat healthily but I don’t know what’s good and healthy here, I’ll leave it to you to pick something”, and deciding to accept whatever the chef serves. You may or may not like it, but you’ll have a better idea of which healthy dish you enjoy the next time.

So, if you have certain expectations of what your wish looks like, release those expectations. You could be pleasantly surprised.

There are also times when you actually want to to leave your request a bit more open-ended (Yes, a complete contradiction of #1). When you really have no idea what you truly want, are open to new things, and are willing to take small risks, try setting your intentions in terms of “opportunities”.

For example, if you’re looking for a new job, “Please send me opportunities for a new job, in the highest good of all.”

“Opportunities” because it gives options (you’ve never met anyone so afraid of not having options). Some people might just want to outright ask for a new job. It’s totally up to you, your preferences and the situation you’re in.

“In the highest good of all” – it’s like a safety net for me – it lets me feel I have permission, and that I’m not being selfish.

Over time, you will gain clarity around what you truly want, and be able to set clear and specific intentions.

Take note: There’s no guarantee of a pleasant experience when you set your intentions. Life lessons and challenges can surface as part of fulfilling your intentions. It is only *after* the experience, and you have reflected on it, that you’ll be in a better place.

Try this: To get comfortable setting this kind of intentions, practice using it in small ways in daily life situations where you feel safe to experiment, e.g. set an intention for learning/enjoyment/awareness, then go to the cinema and watch whatever is available next. Or set an intention to have new perspectives, then go to the bus-stop and take whatever bus arrives next. Be open, and be observant.

Setting Intentions: Be Specific

Julia Ng · May 15, 2013 · Leave a Comment

be specific about your intentions
pin this if you like it! 🙂

There is absolutely a place and time for setting goals, but if/when you find setting goals a pain in the butt, digging a little deeper to find the intention behind the goal can help by bringing more meaning to it.

Think of the Universe as an amazing, powerful Delivery-Only Restaurant. It’s a restaurant that produces delicious, soul-nourishing food, and it can deliver whatever you order.

Here’s #1 in this 6-part series. (Catch up on the other tips here: Surprise!, Essence, Size Matters, It’s about YOU, Set it Free.)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Be very specific with your order.
Why: The more you know what you want, the easier it is to deliver your order.
When you order food in a restaurant, you talk about the dishes you want, and if you have any specific instructions regarding how you want them prepared, you also mention it.
Imagine what a headache the staff and the kitchen would have if you told them all the things you didn’t want instead. Same concept for setting intentions.
Describe what that looks like to you – one person’s medium is another person’s medium rare – especially when it is something intangible.
  • What would your life look like if you had this in your life?
  • How would you feel when you have this in your life?
Talk about what it IS, rather than what it is not. This is not about positive affirmations, or the Law of Attraction. It is about FOCUS.
Take note: These questions are important because they help you clarify your intentions. Sometimes what we think we want, is not really what we want. Be honest with yourself. And be careful what you wish for 😉
Try this: Take 5 minutes or as much time as you like to consider those questions. Get yourself some quiet space and time to ponder. OR decide to think about those questions through your day and let your mind wander.
Come back in a couple of days for the next tip!
How to Choose A Reader / Reading
Julia Ng · May 6, 2013 · Leave a Comment
Many of my clients are first-timers in the world of astrology, tarot and soul readings and I’m extremely grateful that they took a leap of faith to work with me. A number of them shared that when they started exploring this realm, it was confusing (so much jargon!), somewhat scary (I don’t want to be scammed) and weird (hmm, am I’m comfortable talking to a complete stranger about my personal stuff?!).
So here are a few things to consider before you buy a reading:
1. Are you ready?
No matter how amazing or powerful or in-depth a reading is supposed to be, if you’re not in a state of receptivity, it cannot serve you well.
This DOES NOT mean that:
– you accept everything you hear
– you don’t question what you hear
– you do whatever the reader says
It means the doors to your heart and mind are slightly ajar.
That you are open to possibilities.
To exploring ideas.
You know what, I cannot emphasise this enough:
Readings are TOOLS.
They are methods of gathering information for CONSIDERATION and ANALYSIS.
They do NOT EVER tell you HOW to walk Your Path.
They offer you starting points. (Okay, I’ll let up on the caps now :P)
It doesn’t have to be a 100% ‘yes’, but if you can’t muster a ‘probably’ or ‘possibly’ to this question, you can pretty much skip the rest of the questions.
2. Does the reader resonate with you?
When you visit the reader’s website, read what they write, does it click with you?
Do you like the way things are presented? Do you like the style and tone of the writing?
Does it make you go, “Mm, there’s something interesting I could explore here”?
If you don’t understand what they write, or what they are trying to say, it is not that you lack the knowledge. It’s not your area, you’re not expected to know! Find someone you find easy to understand.
If somehow, for whatever reason, logical or not, they make you wrinkle your nose, furrow your brows, or throw up a little, move on. You’re not a good fit. At least not right now.
Whatever it is, absolutely, 100% trust your gut feeling on this.
3. Choose a suitable reading.
What do you want from your reading?
Do you have something specific to ask? Something you want to work on?
Is there a special occasion? Or is it life in general?
As I’d mentioned, readings are tools. How effective a tool is, depends on how it is used. No one uses a hammer to crack open an egg, know what I mean?
My personal take:
  • Akashic Record readings – for a high level overview of who you are and your life (e.g. soul purpose, innate gifts, life lessons), investigating energetic blocks in general or for specific situations (you’ve tried all the logical/obvious things and nothing seems to work)
  • Birth/Natal charts – for greater self-awareness in more concrete terms (e.g. what nurtures/drives/annoys you, your communication style etc)
  • Solar Return charts – to look at the birthday year ahead (best done a month or two before your next birthday)
  • Relationship/Synastry charts – to understand the energetic flow between two people and the energy of the relationship itself
  • Timing charts – to find good/suitable timings, usually for a good start
  • Tarot readings – to get a general overview for a period of time, to explore options for a specific situation, to look at the energy flow between people or in a situation for that point in time
That’s about all the different situations I can think of at the moment. Leave a comment if you have any questions! 🙂
What about you? What do you look out for when you’re looking for a reader?
